We are surrounded by Mathematics in our everyday lives and our curriculum at Upton House is at aimed at allowing children to apply math concepts with confidence, not just in maths lessons but in real life scenarios.

To ensure all children progress to the best of their ability, lessons are approached in a variety of ways and all learning styles are catered for. Concrete resources, visual aids and kinaesthetic games help bring lessons to life before children tackle more abstract concepts.

In the early years, we introduce maths through playful activities like counting games, sorting, and exploring shapes. As children move into Key Stage 1 and 2, we build on these foundations with practical, real-life problem-solving activities. In each year group the following strands are taught and reinforced: place value; number (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division); calculating shape, space & measures, and data handling.
Problem solving is part of every math lesson and children are encouraged to relate their learning to the wider world. Mental arithmetic is a key skill which is taught from an early age. Number bonds are a key focus in Pre Prep before children move on to learning their times tables.
