Digital Fundamentals
Digital Fundamentals now forms part of the technology curriculum in the Prep department.
We embed basic digital skills through presentations, research and education on online safety.
Real application develops higher up the school through projects linked to lessons therefore increasing opportunities for cross-curricular activities and school events e.g. live-streaming Open Morning, Prep class assemblies, musical soirées.
Pupils are able to specialise further in Year 6 in their digital area of interest e.g. designing digital backdrops for school productions, making stories and the love of reading come to life for World Book Day using digital techniques (AI image generator, green screen)
, developing the skills of script writing, set design, green screen filming, interviewing, podcasting, video-editing, using film industry software (Davinci Resolve) in post-production activities including the world of special effects.
In our popular Broadcasting Club, pupils can try different disciplines/skills e.g. presenting to camera using a teleprompter, vision mixing, operating cameras, sound desk, directing, editing pre-recorded footage including laying graphics via Canva and selecting music.
In exploring these different roles children develop confidence and self-esteem.
Music Technology
At Upton we are proud to be pioneers in the field of music production and we are able to dedicate specific lessons each week to music technology, providing our children with a platform to experiment with and create music in a fun, exciting and user-friendly way. All of our children, including those do not consider themselves to be innately musical, have the opportunity to write songs, compose, arrange and edit pieces of music in ways that they couldn’t possibly have imagined not that long ago. Using our state-of-the-art suite of Apple workstations running both GarageBand and Logic Pro X, we show the children how they can use the technology to produce content that is inspiring, current and hopefully, music that the next generation will listen to. To assist us with this we have a fully equipped professional Apple sound studio adjacent to the music technology room so that the children can begin working on a project and when ready, record their vocals or an instrumental track in the studio before continuing to edit, mix and master the project all the way to its completion.
